Training courses

The Michael Palin Centre is a team of experienced specialist speech and language therapists working in the field of disorders of fluency, with a range of additional post-graduate qualifications. Members of the team are involved in clinical work with children and adults who stammer, offering a full individual consultation service, specialist therapy packages on an individual or group basis, a range of teaching within our national teaching programme, supervision of generalist and specialist therapists, writing and research.

We approach stammering from a multi-factorial perspective and tailor our treatment accordingly. We collaborate closely as a team and with others in the profession, and place an emphasis on working with the whole family system. Our approach is integrative and responsive to the needs of each individual. Alongside fluency therapy, we aim to address issues of behaviour management, develop family problem solving skills, increase children's self-esteem and offer support to parents. We help the children and their parents to make changes in their view of the stammering problem, in their view of themselves and of their coping ability, in making choices about how they approach problems and in making changes in behavioural terms.

We draw on a range of psychological treatment methods in our work, in particular Personal Construct Psychology, Brief Therapy and Cognitive Therapy. We believe that psychological reconstruction of the problem facilitates long-term maintenance so we place equal value on addressing the psychological aspects of stammering as well as the behavioural components.

For the fifth year running, Action for Stammering Children and the Emily Hughes-Hallett fund are supporting three Palin PCI training courses to be held around the UK, in order to extend the reach of the training for therapists in the management of early childhood stuttering, in particular to those for whom travel costs for training in London would be prohibitive. For more information about the training course click here.

The charity will fully fund courses for 30 therapists and provide a free copy of the course manual (worth £30) to each participant. Trainers’ fees, travel and accommodation costs are also funded by the charity. Course participants each make a donation of £50 to Action for Stammering Children.

Host organisations provide the venue and process the participants’ applications and are entitled to an allocation of ten of the places on the course.

The Michael Palin Centre offers training courses for SLT teams within their own location enabling teams (and neighbouring teams) to access training and develop a whole team approach.  This is available for the UK and internationally.

Typically, local teams opt to start with one of our core courses. The most popular tends to be Palin Parent-Child Interaction therapy (Palin PCI), followed by the Primary School Children who Stammer course a few months later. Other local teams may prefer bespoke training, for example the MPC have delivered one to two day courses on Perfectionism and Stammering, One Day Introduction to Stammering, Measuring Outcome, Building Skills in Speech Management, Research and its Application to Clinical Practice, Managing Teasing and Bullying, Down Syndrome and Stammering and Increasing Confidence in Working with Parents. Bespoke training can be organised by contacting the Centre.

Cost: £1,000 per day (+ subsistence, travel & accommodation for one trainer)
We recommend training up to 40 people at a time in order to enable group discussion and an interactive format.

1.  We offer the opportunity of one or more week(s) observation and training to speech and language therapists within the Centre.  Therapists can specify the client group they wish to focus on and we try to arrange a programme to suit their needs. During the week(s) there are opportunities for clinical observation, skills practice, reading and discussion with members of the team. Cost: £400 per week

2. One-day observation.  Come to the Centre to observe clinical sessions and have a debrief with one of the staff.  Cost £100.

3. Visit and overview of the work of the Centre.  Cost: £100 per hour (individual or group)

These 2-week programmes are held during the Easter and October half-term holidays for 10-14 year olds and their parents, and in the Summer holidays for young people, 15-19 years old. We invite speech and language therapists to observe and participate in these groups. Experience in a variety of group management skills and intervention strategies is gained in a highly practical context. Cost: £600
